Pocketplayer, Rudy_Ment, and everyone else who digs the Neo-Soul stuff (great music indeed), go to www.okayplayer.com On the homepage, if you scroll to the first news update, you will see two amazing live D'Angelo tracks, "One Mo' Gin" and "Brown Sugar". Both of them feature ?uestlove of The Roots on drums, and he is one DIRTY cat on the drums. Just smoooooooth. ?uest takes a drum break in "Brown Sugar", quoting James Brown's "Funky Drummer". Check it out, great great great stuff here.

Hey funkydrummer, first of all, happy xmas to you.
Secondly, wow, great find man! I'm currently listening to brown sugar. I never tire of that tune, it's just a classic. Where most drummers would go off on one during a solo, uestlove just keeps it so chilled and tasty. Good stuff! Not sure who's on the original, but I read that gene lake played on that album, perhaps all of the tracks.

Happy holidays to you as well Rudy my man (everyone else on HOD as well). Brown Sugar is an amazing album (as is Voodoo, D'Angelo is the MAN). That break by ?uestlove is absolute GOLD. Takes a cue from JB's drummers, all of which were tremendous. Gene Lake does play a bunch on that "Brown Sugar" album, and he's also a monster drummer. Just an absolute beast. I know that Ali Shaheed Muhammad does some programming on there as well. You'll probably know him from A Tribe Called Quest. Definetely a hip-hop group worth checking out, especially the albums "The Low End Theory" and "Midnight Marauders". A guy named Ralph Rolle is on Brown Sugar too, playing drums. Such a beautiful album, I think i'm gonna pop it in right now.

Ralph Rolle is a New York player who can be seen every week in the house band of Showtime At The Apollo. He seems to be doing more R&B sessions for major artists lately. Speaking of ?estlove, any opinions/reviews of the 'Philadelphia Experiment' CD with Christian McBride and Uri Caine?

Ralph Rolle, funny you should mention that name. Never heard of him till a few days ago. I looked at the credits of the queen latifah CD and he plays on a couple of tunes.
By the way funkydrummer, on friday I went to buy a CD as a xmas present and happened to notice the new Jill Scott CD going very cheap, so I've finally got it now but haven't listened to it yet. Of course, I do know 'golden' which is superb.

I have a hard time getting into this type of music, at least by these artists. The JB stuff was just classic and a raw feel to me. The drum sound here is also hard to take--seems so unnatural IMO.
Not sure why ?uestlove gets all of that. When someone gets drum chair accolades they need to be better than someone I can see locally any night of the week. I just don't get it.
To all who dig neo soul (whatever that means) enjoy!

To be honest, I don't really know why they call it 'neo', but I just replace the 'o' with 'w', cos basically, it is new soul.
?uestlove just has an amazing tight groove. I've neve heard him play any chops, and I rate drummers like erik tribbett higher than him in many ways, but ?uestlove has an incredible simplicity in his grooves that is very infectious and hypnotic to listen to. I had an mp3 with him playing with the roots, a song called 'the spark'. Very simple groove but tight as hell!

D'Angelo is BAD.
?uestlove is BAD.
Thanks for these. Great to hear some live D'Angelo (only live stuff I've heard is the 'Live at Jazz Cafe' record.)
Voodoo is one of my favorite albums ever. Everyone should own it.

All of the chops in the world are certainly impressive and show that the musician has worked very hard to develope his/her technique. But, I have to that if all of those chops cannot produce a really firm foundation of time, feel, and groove. Then, sorry folks don't dance or bop their heads in clubs and live venues to chops. With that said, "Keep It In The Pocket". PT. Oh thanks FD for this great funky stuff and Happy Holidays my brother!

Glad to see that folks are enjoying this stuff as much as I am. Pocketime, could not have said it better myself. Happy holidays indeed to all my fellow soul-funksters on HOD! (and everyone else on HOD too!)
